Sing for a Change! sing for Living Wage Week

On Monday 6th November Sing for a Change! performed for the London launch of Living Wage Week where the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced that the new London Living Wage will be £10.20. The event was organised by the Living Wage Foundation and Citizens UK.The choir sang four songs to a packed crowd of about 150 people at the LUSH Studios in Carnaby. It was such an exciting event to be a part of and a wonderful opportunity to share what we do. We started with a couple of African-American Spirituals called “Woke Up This Morning (Stayed on Freedom)” and “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around”. We then sang our very own song “It Starts With Us” which we wrote recently in a song-writing workshop. This is only the second time we have performed this song in public! Then finally, we finished with the Dolly Parton song “Nine to Five” which represented the theme of the event perfectly.Afterwards some of us had the opportunity for a photograph with Sadiq Khan which was then chosen as one of the photos to represent the event on social media. A huge well done to all choir members for getting up so early, being so committed, full of energy and for singing your hearts out.Sing for a Change! is a social justice community choir based in Hackney. We sing songs about justice, freedom, love and peace and our aim is to use the power of music to change the world one small step at a time.
