Accessibility Information
We are committed to making St John’s Hoxton a welcoming and hospitable space for everyone. To this end we are always looking to improve our accessibility. A range of information is provided below, but please contact via the links in the footer if there is something we should consider.
-
The church building is located within its own churchyard and gardens. The postcode N1 6NP will identify the building on most maps.
///leave.asks.flock will identify the main entrance on What3Words.
///faded.gloves.holly identifies the main gate to the car park.
-
We have a large car parking area. During the week it runs commercially to raise funds for the church. On Sundays it is always possible to park for free to attend a service.
-
The nearest stations are Old St and Hoxton.
The 76 bus stops near the church at the Bevenden St stop on New North Rd. The 205 or 214 also stop near Old St.
The church building is a 5-10 minute walk from Old St or Hoxton stations, and about 5 mins from the 76 bus stop on New North Rd.
-
There are 4 shallow steps to the main door of the church at the west end.
There is also a ramp available to assist those with wheelchairs, walkers or prams. The ramp is pitched at an incline that is steeper than it should be, but is manageable by most.
There is usually a member of our welcome team outside the church to assist people.
-
From the main entrance there is another short ramp to access the main church. After this, the rest of the main church is on the same level.
Some of the double entrance doors are narrow, and to conserve energy they are not always both opened. But there is usually a member of the Welcome Team on hand to open the second door for those who need it.
-
We have large print bibles available to use, and all the liturgy and song words are projected on large screens.
We keep the font large and readable, and we avoid presenting in block capitals.
We have a hearing induction loop.
-
Our seating is provided by chairs. These can all be moved to make space for wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
There are also some pews on the side for those who prefer.
-
The whole of the ground floor of the church is accessible by wheelchair users with the exception of the stage and choirstalls. The stage is not high - so wheelchair users can often participate in bible readings or prayers from in front of the stage at ground level.
Holy Communion is always distributed at ground level.
-
Assistance dogs are welcome.
-
There are usually quite a few people around before the Sunday services - often preparing refreshments or practising music.
At 10am on Sunday morning we pray together in the hall area - and anyone is welcome to join us.
If you prefer to go into the main worship space and sit quietly that is fine.
-
The culture of our church services is vibrant and joyful. This often involves loud music and singing, as well as some dancing.
However, everyone is welcome to participate as they prefer - and some people will simply sit silently and observe.
The service is roughly divided into gathering worship (25 mins); a talk from the bible (25 mins); and holy communion with prayer ministry (20 mins). There are often notices, and kids and youth going to / returning from groups at the joins between sections.
-
We invite all baptised Christians to receive the bread and wine of Holy Communion - and this includes baptised children if they’ve discussed and agreed it with their parents.
All our bread is gluten-free and our wine is non-alcoholic so that everyone can participate.
-
A cafe area serves tea, coffee, cold drinks, fruit and pastries after the service.
Many people stay around and socialise in the hall area or main church space.
-
We have three toilets serving the main church space. One of these is a wheelchair accessible toilet with alarm cord.
The accessible toilet also has a baby-change table.
All toilets have sanitary bins, and we keep a small supply of nappies, wipes and sanitary products avaiable in each.
-
Babies and children are very welcome in our church - however noisy. We make provision for babies, toddler, children and youth right up to age 18 at our Sunday morning service.
-
We hold a special service at 4pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month called ‘Fun@4’. This is geared towards children with special educational needs.
